Haunting Guilt
There are moments in our lives wherein even the smallest and meaningless things can make us guilty. And because of this some of us spend some sleepless nights thinking about it, to the point that it hampers our day. Guilt feelings can be depressing and keep us from moving forward with our life.
Guilt is an emotional warning sign that most people learn through their normal childhood social development. Its purpose is to let us know when we’ve done something wrong, to help us develop a better sense of our behavior, and how it affects ourselves and others. It prompts us to re-examine our behavior so that we don’t end up making the same mistake twice. It is important that we have to do something whenever guilt feelings would haunt us, and not wallow in the marshes of blaming ourselves throughout our lives. Tips to overcome guilt –
- Realize that guilt is normal and we all have it
- Think through why your actions made you feel guilty
- Learn from those actions & promise to try not to repeat them
- Realize that we are all humans, and this may not be possible, but make it a personal promise to do better
- Apologize to someone, if your actions hurt someone. This will help alleviate some of the guilt, and hopefully the hurt party will accept your apology.
- Realize each day is a new beginning filled with promise, hope and the opportunity to start over.
- Do not dwell on the actions that may have caused guilt
- Each time a guilt feeling arises, instead of wallowing in it, take one affirmative step.
- Do a good deed. Do some act of kindness to your love ones and the people whom you cross path with.
- Seek medical assistance. Excessive guilt could be a part of psychological or medical condition.
- See trusted clergyman or priest. Some faiths offer ways to atone sinning.
